Be Yourself

Audioslave said it well. It's simple. Be yourself.

This concept has been running through my head a lot lately.

Lots of people don't like me. Sometimes that's fine with me. Sometimes it isn't. But what matters to me isn't whether or not the people around me like me. What matters to me is that I like me. If I like me, then the people who I should have in my life will like me, too.

I think that all too often, we try to make ourselves what we feel like everyone else will like and accept. We do or don't wear something because it is or isn't "in". We do or don't listen to certain music depending on who might be in the room. But there comes a point when who you are, the good and the bad, the awkward and embarrassing, the boy bands and the old sweat pants from high school...it is what it is. We are who we are.

And it's okay to like yourself. Even when other people don't like you.

I like myself. And a lot of people don't like me. Whatever.

I think it says something about the people we surround ourselves with, when we are able to let all the walls down, and be ourselves. Sure there are different aspects of "me". The real me loves to dress up and go shopping and be girly. But the real me also love sweat pants and Food Network and boy bands. Those are both real. Those are both me.

I hope that I make people feel like they can be themselves. It's my goal this week to work on that. Because I'm hell bent on being me. I can't expect any different from anyone else.

Just something I've been thinking about lately...

Good post! I need to have Jordan read this one. Also love the quote by Marilyn Monroe!

Lyss, This is one of my very favorite things about you. You make me feel like I should be proud to be myself when you say "THESE SHOES ARE SO YOU" (the all caps is indicative of your super excited voice). Your confidence is contagious, and it's enough to make me forgive the Backstreet Boys thing...

Thanks, Pam. I think Marilyn Monroe is one of the smartest women ever.

You should be proud of yourself. You're one of the greatest people I have ever known! It's so easy to be happy around you. I want to be more like that! Love you!
